Ibiza beyond the clubs: Dalt Vila, quiet coves and villas
Dalt Vila, the old walled town of Ibiza, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, under the title Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture. The island's older identity is easy to miss, and well worth finding.
The old town
Dalt Vila rises above the harbour in stone ramparts and white lanes. It is best walked early, before the heat, and followed by a long lunch. A guide who knows its history makes the stones speak.
The sea
The coves of Ibiza are reached most quietly by boat, away from the beach clubs. The rocky coast, the clear water and the islet of Es Vedrà are the reasons to go afloat, ideally with a chef on board.
Villas and tables
Away from the nightlife, Ibiza is a place of villas with full staff, private chefs and long dinners at sunset. The island is liveliest from late spring to early autumn, and quieter and more local outside that season.
How long to stay
Four to seven days suits Ibiza: enough for a morning in Dalt Vila, a day at sea and several unhurried evenings in a villa. Longer stays allow a quieter rhythm, with fewer plans and more time at the table.
Who it suits
The island suits guests who want privacy and ease, whether with family, friends or for a celebration. It is less about doing and more about a well-run house, a good boat and a table that is always ready.
